Codi Bigsby Disappearance: Latest Developments in Murder Case - Indictment of Cory Bigsby

The case of Codi Bigsby's disappearance has been ongoing since January 2022. Codi's father, Cory Bigsby, reported his son missing from their Buckroe townhome, and police named him as the only person of interest in their investigation. After months of investigation, the authorities have concluded that Codi is dead, and on June 5, 2023, Cory Bigsby was indicted for the murder and concealment of Codi's body. This update on the case will explore the latest developments in the investigation and the efforts to find Codi.

The Search for Codi

On January 31, 2022, Cory Bigsby reported his 4-year-old son, Codi, missing from their Buckroe townhome. A search immediately ensued, but Codi was nowhere to be found. Police named Cory as the only person of interest in their investigation. The authorities have long presumed that Codi is dead, although his body has never been found.

From the first minutes of the investigation, Hampton Police Chief Mark Talbot said that the evidence about what likely occurred has been very clear. There is little about this that has been mysterious. Since then, the authorities have been working tirelessly to find Codi's body and bring justice to his family.

Cory Bigsby's Arrest and Mental Competency

During the initial investigation, Cory Bigsby was taken down to the station for questioning, which turned into an interrogation that spanned days. He was subsequently arrested on multiple charges of child neglect, and since then, he has remained in jail. His mental competency has been called into question, and after several hearings, a grand jury was convened and on June 5, 2023, Cory Bigsby was indicted for the murder and concealment of Codi's body.

The Mental Health Evaluation

A recently released mental health evaluation reveals that Cory Bigsby is competent to stand trial. Dr. Weare Zwermer conducted an evaluation of Cory Bigsby in February and March, during which he determined that Bigsby seemed to understand the legal process ahead of him but not the seriousness of the charges against him. The evaluation also detailed Bigsby's "escalating paranoia" and a series of "bizarre" behaviors during his time at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail.

In March, Bigsby's team requested a judge to dismiss the charges against him after they say the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office obtained evidence that wasn't submitted to the defense for months. The evidence is a written statement Bigsby wrote while in jail. Bigsby's defense team said the Commonwealth got a copy of that letter on Aug. 3 but did not share it with the defense team until November.

The Competency Restoration Services

Bigsby was behind bars without bail at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail until a judge ordered him to Eastern State Hospital in March to receive competency restoration services after an exam found him incompetent to stand trial. Licensed Clinical Psychologist William McKenna evaluated the father on May 30 and determined he is now competent to stand trial.

During his hospitalization, Bigsby's thought process was "goal-directed" and did not contain "overt delusional ideation, obsessions, or phobias," according to the report. He also denied having any auditory or visual hallucinations. A doctor diagnosed him with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and prescribed him medication.

Bigsby began competency restoration services on April 19 and addressed several concerns that Zwermer highlighted in his evaluation of the father that happened in the spring. Those included conflicting background information that Bigsby gave several medical providers, which the father said had been "misinterpreted." He also told the counselor that he gave erroneous biographical information to at least one evaluation because "he believed the evaluator did not need to know such personal details," the report states.

The Indictment

On June 5, 2023, a grand jury indicted Cory Bigsby on charges of murder and concealment of a dead body. The paperwork associated with the indictment has not been filed yet in Hampton Circuit Court, according to clerks in that office. He's also facing 30 charges connected to the alleged abuse and neglect of Codi and his brothers.

Codi's Legacy

Codi's disappearance has had a profound effect on his family, friends, and the community at large. Despite the challenges of this case, Codi's memory lives on through the efforts of those who have worked tirelessly to find him and bring justice to his family.

The Trial of Trezell and Jacqueline West for the Murders of Orrin and Orson West

The Trial of Trezell and Jacqueline West: Updates on Orrin and Orson West's Murder Case. Follow the gripping And Then They Were Gone podcast as we delve into the trial, exploring the evidence, conflicting accounts, and the search for justice in this high-profile murder case.

The trial of Trezell and Jacqueline West has begun, and the world is watching with bated breath. The couple stands accused of killing their two adopted sons, Orrin and Orson West, who went missing in December 2020. The case has gained significant attention, with many following the story closely since the boys' disappearance. This blog post is for a two-part episode of the And Then They Were Gone podcast, covering the trial, and providing updates and insights into the case.

On December 21, 2020, Trezell and Jacqueline West reported their two adopted sons, Orrin and Orson, missing. According to the Wests, the boys were playing in the family's fenced-in yard while Trezell was gathering wood. On one of his trips back, he noticed they were gone. An intensive search immediately commenced, but there was no sign of the boys. As the public began to hear the story's details, many concluded that Jacqueline and Trezell's account didn't make any sense. Police also quickly added the parents to the top of their suspect list.

The case continued to develop, with searches continuing, but with no luck. Then, on March 1, 2022, Jacqueline and Trezell West were arrested for murder. Their trial is underway, despite the fact that the bodies of Orrin and Orson have yet to be found.

The facts of the Case

Over the course of several weeks, the prosecution laid out its case, which, absent the boys' bodies or other physical evidence, hinges on a star witness: Trezell and Jacqueline's 12-year-old son. The prosecution contends that the brothers had already been dead for months before the 911 call was made. The prosecution has argued that the Wests' account of events is inconsistent and that they have provided false information to law enforcement. They have also claimed that the Wests had a motive and opportunity to kill their children

The defense, meanwhile, has argued that the prosecution's case is entirely circumstantial and that the Wests are innocent until proven guilty. They have suggested that the boys may have been kidnapped or run away, and are still alive somewhere. The defense has also presented evidence of Trezell and Jacqueline's loving relationship with their sons, claiming that they would never do anything to harm them.

The Vanishing Chef: Looking into the 2009 Disappearance of Claudia Lawrence

In 2009, Claudia Lawrence, a 35-year-old chef at the University of York, vanished without a trace. Despite extensive searches and investigations, no one has been able to solve the mystery of her disappearance. In this episode, Kona and Ethan delve into the details of the case, exploring the possible motives and suspects, as well as the challenges faced by investigators. Join us as we take a closer look at one of the most perplexing missing person cases in recent history.

The disappearance of Claudia Lawrence in 2009 is a case that has captivated the attention of the public and law enforcement officials alike. Claudia Lawrence was a 35-year-old chef who worked at the University of York. She was last seen on March 18, 2009, and her disappearance has remained a mystery ever since.

The investigation into Claudia's disappearance has been one of the largest and most complex in the history of North Yorkshire Police. The police have conducted extensive searches of the area around Claudia's home and workplace, as well as interviewing hundreds of people who knew her. Despite these efforts, no trace of Claudia has been found, and no arrests have been made in connection with her disappearance.

One of the most puzzling aspects of Claudia's disappearance is the lack of any clear motive. She was not involved in any criminal activity, and there was no evidence of any personal or financial problems that might have led her to disappear. This has led some to speculate that Claudia may have been the victim of a random attack, or that she may have been abducted by someone she knew.

Another factor that has made the investigation into Claudia's disappearance difficult is the lack of physical evidence. There were no signs of a struggle at Claudia's home, and no DNA or other forensic evidence has been found that might help to identify a suspect. This has led some to suggest that Claudia may have been the victim of a carefully planned and executed crime, with the perpetrator taking great care to avoid leaving any evidence behind.

Despite the challenges faced by investigators, the case of Claudia Lawrence remains open, and the police continue to follow up on any leads or new information that may come to light. The disappearance of Claudia Lawrence is a tragic reminder of the dangers that can lurk in our communities, and the importance of remaining vigilant and aware of our surroundings. It is also a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement officials who work tirelessly to bring justice to victims and their families.

Listen to this episode of And Then They Were Gone for a deep dive into the investigation into Claudia Lawrence’s disappearance.

Alexander “AJ” Silva

Discover the tragic story of Alexander "AJ" Silva, a teenager from Houston, Texas who disappeared despite being under court-ordered GPS monitoring. Learn about the limitations of GPS technology and the Silva family's fight for justice in this in-depth blog post, and listen to the full story on the And Then They Were Gone podcast.

Uncovering the Tragic Disappearance of Alexander "AJ" Silva: How GPS Monitoring Failed

As the world becomes increasingly connected, it's natural to assume that technology would make it easier to track down missing individuals. However, the case of Alexander "AJ" Silva, a teenager from Houston, Texas, proves that this isn't always the case.

AJ was arrested in early 2021 and was required to wear an ankle monitor while he awaited trial. It was while he was wearing that device and being monitored by the Harris County court system that he disappeared and met what witnesses say was a horrific fate. But how was it possible for a county to lose someone when they had the ability to track his exact location?

The answer lies in the limitations of GPS monitoring. While the technology can provide real-time location data, it is not foolproof. Ankle monitors, for example, rely on a combination of GPS and cellular technology to transmit location data. If a person were to enter an area with limited cellular coverage or tamper with the device, their location would no longer be accurately tracked. In addition to technical limitations, there is inadequate monitoring and follow-up when it comes to defendants who are on pre-trial monitoring.

The Silva family is now fighting for justice, calling for an investigation into how the county was able to lose track of their son despite his court-ordered GPS monitoring. They also hope to raise awareness about the limitations of GPS monitoring and the importance of using multiple forms of surveillance in cases like AJ's.

It is a tragic reminder that technology alone cannot solve all of our problems. It is important to remember that surveillance technologies, like GPS monitoring, have their limits and should not be relied on as the sole means of tracking an individual. It also highlights the importance of multiple layers of surveillance, as well as the need for thorough investigations and accountability when things go wrong.

The Silva family's fight for justice serves as a call to action for all of us to continue working towards solutions that will help keep our loved ones safe.

Friends and family have been dissecting his last moves for years, trying to find clues as to what happened to Robert. Was he a victim of violence? Did he harm himself? Did he simply walk away, leaving his family and all of his possessions behind?

On December 7, 2022, the public finally received some answers when Robert Hoagland was found. Authorities say that he had been living in Rock Hill, New York for the past nine years. In this episode, we discuss what has been revealed about Robert Hoagland's life in the past decade so far, as well as our theories as to what happened.

CJ and Billy Vosseler

Sources and links for the podcast episode on the disappearance of CJ and Billy Vosseler.

We’ve all heard of people who have used children as pawns in a divorce. Maybe they’re fighting on visitation or child support payments because they don’t want to give their soon-to-be ex what they want. But in some extreme cases, the animosity and need for control can be destructive. Charles Vosseler needed to be in charge. He needed to decide where his two sons, 3-year-old CJ, and 2-year-old Billy, were at all times. So when it was clear that his marriage to his wife, Ruth, wasn’t working out, Charles hatched a plan.

On October 9, 1986, this plan culminated in him kidnapping his children and keeping them hidden for decades. Over the past 30-plus years, Ruth has never given up on her children. Today, at age 75, she is still out there fighting to keep their names and their faces in the public consciousness, in hopes of finally bringing them home.
